E. Michael Brady is Professor of Adult Education at the University of Southern Maine. He holds degrees from St. Mary’s Seminary and University (B.A., M.Div.) and the University of Connecticut (M.S.W., Ph.D.). Mike teaches graduate courses in adult education history and theory, action research, facilitation, and gerontology.

He also teaches one undergraduate course, an annual travel-based experience entitled “Baseball and American Society: A Journey.” This course, which travels by motor coach to between eight and twelve major and minor league cities each summer, has been featured in dozens of newspaper and television reports and has won a national education award.

Mike holds a research appointment with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and in that role has published a number of studies related to older learners. Recent articles have examined journal writing in later age, peer teaching and learning in the lifelong learning institute (LLI) environment, the perceived benefits of participating in LLI’s, and working with elders with early-stage dementia in adult education. In addition to conducting empirical research Mike is founder and editor of a national journal dedicated to explorations by and about older learners entitled The LLI Review. This journal is published by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes’ National Resource Center with generous funding from the Bernard Osher Foundation in San Francisco, CA.

Mike’s hobbies include journal writing, playing folk guitar, listening to music (e.g., folk, classical, Renaissance polyphony, Celtic), reading in variety of genres including fiction, poetry, history, religion, and sport, taking long walks, and attending baseball games at Hadlock Field, the home of the Eastern League Portland Sea Dogs. He and his wife Nancy have been married 28 years and have three adult children.
